Ariela and Shadi

So you've all seen Shadi before! But this time we brought Ariela along. She is super talented by the way, and won the Concerto Competition at Interlochen this year. Anyway, this was an even colder day than all the others that I've blogged so far. It's kind of hard to avoid the cold when you go to school in northern Michigan.

Shadi, Ariela, and I dragged a bucket full of warm water from our dorm to the woods in order to do this first shot with water dripping down Shadi's face (still one of my favorites to this day). We also used it in the shot with Ariela laying down. The warm water was a relief for them from the cold at first, but after it just made it even colder! These girls were awesome.

Mia is a Ball of Sunshine

Mia was also a trooper! Actually, all my models are. But it was even more cold when we took these. I was really happy with them. I love how you can see Mia's cheerful personality, even i. pictures :) She is seriously a ray of sunshine.

I cut out all that confetti too! Haha if you can't tell already, I cut out a lot of things for my photos... you'll see more later that involve me wasting trees.

Dani

So the next shoot I did, Dani was a real trooper. It was freezing out but she was patient with me and posed for over an hour. There's something about dancers that I really like in photos. Updating my blog kind of makes me miss Interlochen cause I see all the places I first shot, and the people who first helped me get started.

P.S. I cut out ALL those stars and little dancers, blew up the balloons, and decorated the box. Twas a LOT of effort, and now that I look back I don't really like them.

Caleb, Haley, & Amanda

These are photos of the people I shot with after I did my first "shoot" with Shadi. I don't know how I feel about them, but they were definitely a milestone in my photography "journey," for lack of a better word.

My First "Photo Shoot"

This is the first official "photo shoot" I ever had. This is my friend Shadi. She went to Interlochen with me and lived in the same dorm. Sometimes I think my older work was better. I've been having trouble thinking of photo ideas, and my photos feel forced.

Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz just blows my mind. She is such an amazing photographer. My two favorite photos of her work are still the photos she took of The White Stripes, and of course John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The photo of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is not only on of my favorite because it is a great photograph, but because she had the honor of being the last person to photograph him before he was killed that day.

R.I.P. John Lennon.

My Guinea Pigs

My friends Jordan, Mei, & Gracie were my first models. One could say they were sort of like my photography guinea pigs. I love them to death. I get to see them this Saturday because I'm going back up to Interlochen to take senior photos for people.

My First Photos

These are the first photos I had ever taken. If it wasn't for Mani randomly asking me to take her senior photos, I would never have started photography.

A Little History

So this is my first "blog post."

I don't plan on this being a blog about my personal life, although I'll probably end up venting every now and then. I created From Behind the Lens as a blog about photography, but more specifically a blog about my own photography. Here's a little history about how I got started.

I started photography by accident. I applied to the Interlochen Arts Academy as a violin major three years ago, but I ended up having tendonitis both years I attended, so I didn't do much playing. I ended up buying a camera just to have, and I honestly don't know why I wanted one. But this past April (2010), someone asked if I wanted to take their senior photos, and I figured I'd take a stab at it.

I fell in LOVE with photography, and since then I've been addicted to taking photos. Now I take photos on a weekly basis, and it makes me feel a little empty when I miss a week. I know it sounds stupid, but photography is probably one of my best friends. I know I'm not the best, but it's more for myself than anyone else. I believe that as long as you're passionate about your art, it shouldn't matter how good you are. I plan on using From Behind the Lens as a way to motivate other people to give photography a try, and a place to find advice. I know it's intimidating to put your work out there at first, but its worth a shot.

Hope you enjoy my blog!
